Italian Football Federation president, Giovanni Malago, has confirmed that Pep Guardiola has held talks about becoming Italy’s next head coach.
Malago admitted that “exceptions” could be made in terms of salary for Guardiola.
FIGC officials Paolo Maldini and Leonardo presented their idea to the former Manchester City boss last week.
Guardiola would be the central figure in an ‘Azzurro project’ that aims to rebuild Italian football.
Italy failed to qualify for the expanded 2026 World Cup this summer.
Malago said: “In the short to medium term, saying we need to tighten our belts is an understatement,” he stated.
“However, exceptions have been made, which may concern the name that is so dominant these days .”
