Flood destroys houses, farmlands in Kwara communities

Daily Post about 1 hour 2 mins read

Flooding has destroyed houses and farmlands in Pututa and other communities in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The affected communities include Tswako, Likpata, Godangi and Ekko.

According to a statement by the Deputy Chief Press Secretary to the Kwara State Governor, Mashood Abdulrafiu Agboola, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited the affected areas to sympathise with residents.

The governor said no lives were lost in the flooding, although properties were destroyed.

“No life was lost, but properties were destroyed,” he said.

AbdulRazaq announced a ₦10 million emergency support package for residents of Pututa to provide food, drinking water and medicines.

He also directed the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to assess the extent of the damage caused by the flooding.

The development comes amid a Federal Government flood alert issued on September 28, warning residents in 24 states, including Kwara, of possible flooding between September 27 and October 10, 2026.

The warning followed forecasts of heavy rainfall, rising river levels, saturated soil and increased surface runoff.

The advisory, signed by the department’s Director, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, classified communities across the country into critical, high and moderate flood-risk categories during the period.

States with communities listed in the critical-risk category include Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Adamawa, Bauchi, Taraba, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo.

The Kwara State Government said it would continue discussions with relevant federal authorities on the dredging of the River Niger as part of efforts to find a lasting solution to flooding in the affected areas.

“The government will continue to engage with the Federal Government on the dredging of the River Niger to find a lasting solution to the flooding.”
