A three-storey building collapse in Ilorin, Kwara State, has claimed the lives of four people, while four others were rescued alive as emergency responders continued search-and-rescue operations.
The building, located at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street beside Gogoro Mosque in the Ile Oyan Masalasi Gogoro area of Ilorin, collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said rescue teams had recovered four bodies from the rubble and rescued four survivors.
“Based on the situation report, now we’ve recovered four people dead and rescued four people alive”. Adekunle said.
He added that rescue efforts were still ongoing and that more details would be released as operations progressed.
Earlier reports indicated that at least six people, including two children, were rescued alive from the debris before the latest update from emergency officials.
An eyewitness said personnel of the Fire Service, alongside community members, worked tirelessly at the scene to reach those trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
An excavator was also deployed to clear debris and gain access to sections where more victims might still be trapped.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact number of occupants inside the building at the time of the collapse, while the cause of the incident remains unknown.
