A growing number of Nigerian celebrities have traded the spotlight for military service in the United States, with actors, actresses and beauty queens publicly announcing their enlistment in recent years.

The trend, which has become more noticeable since 2024, reflects a career shift driven by personal fulfilment, patriotism, financial security and the opportunities available through military service. The latest to join the list is Nollywood actor Joseph Momodu, who completed his U.S. Army Basic Combat Training in April 2026.

Here is the updated list of Nigerian celebrities who have publicly announced joining the U.S. army

Grace Charis Bassey (formerly Belinda Effah) – U.S. Navy

Former Nollywood actress Grace Charis Bassey, formerly known as Belinda Effah, became one of the most talked-about celebrities to switch careers after graduating from the United States Navy boot camp in 2025. Her enlistment also earned her U.S. citizenship.

Sharing the milestone on social media, Grace thanked God, her family and supporters while dedicating the achievement to her late father, Naval Commander Asido Bassey Effah.

“Last week, I graduated from U.S. Navy boot camp as a Sailor and took the oath as a citizen of the United States. Nigeria raised me, America challenged me, and I stand today stronger and more determined than ever.”

The actress had earlier revealed that she changed her name from Belinda to Grace after what she described as a divine encounter.

Joseph Momodu – U.S. Army

Actor Joseph Momodu is currently the latest Nigerian entertainer to publicly join the U.S. Army.

He completed his Basic Combat Training in April 2026, becoming the first known male Nollywood actor to publicly announce his enlistment.

Before taking a break from acting, Momodu featured in films including Coming to Nigeria, Play 2 Kill and television series such as Tinsel, Soul Sisters and The Johnsons.

According to the actor, his decision was inspired by the memory of his late father, who served in the Nigeria Police Force, describing his military career as a tribute to his father’s legacy.

Princess Chineke – U.S. Army

Former beauty queen and Nollywood actress Princess Chineke also joined the U.S. Army after relocating to the United States.

Announcing her enlistment on Instagram, Chineke explained that joining the military was her way of serving her adopted country.

“I’m an American soldier. I’m a member of a team. We are the Army and proud of our name. I answered the call of service to my country, to serve the people of the United States of America. This I will defend, so help me God. God bless America.”

Before relocating, Chineke had told Vanguard in an interview in 2023 she moved to the United States to further her education and acquire more skills.

She featured in Nollywood productions including To Love A Sister, Stormy Hearts and Masters At War.

Mayowa Dosu – U.S. Army

Actress and producer Mayowa Dosu also swapped Nollywood for military service after joining the U.S. Army.

She shared the news on Instagram after completing her training.

«”I am an American Soldier, I am a warrior and a member of a team. I serve the people of the United States and live the Army values. Oops! What a journey. Who missed me? Sorry I was busy being an American soldier.”»

Dosu began her acting career in 2005 and has appeared in films including Fears, Mamami, Mojere, Compromise, Pawon Strippers, Lastlaugh and Valentino.

Why more Nigerian celebrities are joining the U.S. military

Beyond wearing the uniform, military service in the United States offers several long-term benefits that continue to attract immigrants, including entertainers.

One of the biggest incentives is an accelerated pathway to U.S. citizenship, allowing eligible immigrants to become citizens much faster than through the conventional immigration process.

Service members also receive comprehensive healthcare and dental coverage, housing allowances, competitive salaries, educational benefits that can fund university studies, and career development opportunities.

Those with specialised skills, including foreign language proficiency, may qualify for advanced positions and security clearances, while veterans continue to enjoy benefits long after leaving active service.

For many entertainers seeking stability beyond the uncertainties of the entertainment industry, the U.S. military has increasingly become an attractive alternative career path.
