The Gambia produced a remarkable comeback to beat Ghana 4-2 in a dramatic 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium. The unprecedented score line sparked celebrations among Gambians at home and abroad with historians penciling a new chapter in the country’s football history.
The Black Stars appeared to be in control after racing into a 2-0 lead, but Gambia scored four unanswered goals to complete a stunning turnaround and leave Ghana bottom of their qualifying group after two matches.
Ghana took the lead in the 27th minute when Ernest Nuamah converted from the penalty spot.
Six minutes later, Félix Afena-Gyan doubled Ghana’s advantage with a free-kick, putting the hosts firmly in control.
But Gambia responded before half-time.
Muhammad Badamosi pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 37th minute after Gideon Mensah was penalised for a foul inside the Ghanaian box.
Gambia then completed the comeback to level the match at 2-2 in the 42nd minute, with Omar Colley scoring following a long throw-in.
Ghana had a chance to restore their lead shortly afterwards, but Jonas Adjetey’s effort struck the crossbar.
The two sides went into the break level, with Ghana making changes at half-time as Thomas Asante and Sibo were replaced by Benjamin Tetteh and Ibrahim Sulemana.
Gambia came out strongly after the restart and took the lead for the first time in the 68th minute.
Ebrima Colley capitalised on poor defending from Ghana to put the visitors 3-2 ahead.
Ghana pushed for an equaliser but were unable to find a way through.
Colley then sealed the victory in stoppage time, scoring his second goal of the match in the 90th minute to make it 4-2.
The result completes a remarkable turnaround for Gambia, who had trailed 2-0 after 33 minutes.
The victory leaves Gambia on six points from their opening two qualifying matches, while Ghana remain without a point after two games.
The Black Stars will now have to regroup quickly as they look to revive their hopes of reaching the 2027 Afcon tournament.
