It was a night to remember at the Ikeja Golf Club Saturday, as members of the club who are Indian nationals marked the 80th Independence anniversary of their country in a grand style.
The late evening dinner was the climax of a day-long programme which included a golf tournament that featured over 140 golfers drawn from Ikoyi, Lakowe Golf Clubs, but majorly from Ikeja..
Jimoh.Ogundare braved all opposition to carry the day as the overall winner following his pulsating, heart rending displays on the course. He garnered 38 points to come out tops.
However, of particular mention is Arun Sharma with 74 gross who was declared winner in the men’s category, Wale Kalejaiye 38 points and Henry Gboneme with 37 were first and second runners up respectively.
Zed Jituboh was declared winner of nearest the Pin in the men’s category, while Tokunbo Ogunbiyi won the Longest Drive in the men’s category. Chichi Alamu was winner of the Longest Drive in the Women’s category.
Lynda Obieze was the overall winner in the Women’s category while Abiodun Hassan with 33 points was the runner up. Speaking at the event, Vice Captain Ejiro Ogomigo who represented the Captain of the club commended the Indians for remaining connected to their fatherland despite the distance. He said this year’s Indian Cup was a “great improvement and very competitive. It is a tournament members look up to every year.”
A member of the organising Committee of the Indian Independence Cup tournament Gagandeep Lakhanpal said they chose to celebrate their independence in order to acknowledge the strides the country has taken since independence from Britain 80 years ago. “We are proud of our achievements, particularly in the areas of defense and in information technology. India has a lot to be proud of. That is why we are celebrating.”
We want to see members from other Golf Clubs around Nigeria to come join us and compete together on an annual basis. That will make it unique and special,” he said.
