The Gombe State Internal Revenue Service (GIRS) has arrested two suspects for allegedly collecting illegal revenue using Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals across the state.
The suspects were apprehended during a targeted operation conducted by the Intelligence Department of the agency.
According to GIRS, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were issuing receipts bearing the name of Jigawa State while collecting revenue within Gombe State.
Following their arrest, the agency said the suspects had been handed over to security agencies for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the development, the Executive Chairman of GIRS, Aisha Adamu, condemned the alleged illegal collections, describing the activities as an unacceptable breach capable of undermining the state’s revenue system.
“This is an unacceptable act that could undermine the state’s revenue system,” Adamu said.
She commended the GIRS Intelligence Department, Internal Control and Monitoring Team, and security personnel for their vigilance and efforts to safeguard public funds.
In a statement issued by the Head of Corporate Communications, Faruk Mu’azu Gombe, the agency urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected fraudulent revenue collection activities.
Residents were advised to report any suspicious revenue agents or unauthorised POS collections to the relevant security authorities immediately.
GIRS also reiterated its commitment to working with security agencies to dismantle illegal revenue collection syndicates and protect the state’s revenue.
