Gombe University Laments Admission Crisis As Over 13,000 Applicants Jostle For 7,000 Slots

 

Gombe State University (GSU) is currently experiencing low admission slots in the 2026/2027 academic session, as just 7, 000 slots are available for more than 13, 000 applicants jostling for entrance into the institution.

The revelation comes as the university officially commenced its 2026/2027 academic admission exercise, setting clear policy guidelines during a media briefing at its Senate Chambers.

Attended by community leaders from all 11 Local Government Areas and members of the press, the university administration, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Sani Ahmed Yauta, outlined a highly competitive selection process aimed at maintaining academic excellence while ensuring equitable access.

A focal point of this year’s admission policy is a strict adherence to the national minimum age requirement of 16 years.

However, the University Senate has introduced a rigorous “exceptional candidate” pathway for highly gifted younger applicants.

To qualify for admission consideration despite being under the age of 16, a candidate must meet a high-threshold “exceptional” criteria, which includes: Academic Excellence: Achieving a minimum score of 380 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

 

Verified Proficiency

The processes also include possessing outstanding results in their Ordinary Level (O’Level) papers. This pathway is designed exclusively for students who demonstrate extraordinary intellectual capacity that far exceeds standard entry requirements, ensuring that such high-achieving youth are not barred from the university’s academic environment.

 

Demand VS Carrying Capacity

The University Senate highlighted a significant gap between the high volume of applications and the available capacity. With over 13,000 applications received for only 7,000 available slots, the selection process remains intense.

Professor Yauta detailed the extreme competition within professional faculties, noting that for many programs, success rates are less than 5%.

These include – MBBS (Medicine & Surgery): 2,231 applicants for only 100 spaces, B.Sc. Nursing Science: 2,363 applicants competing for 100 slots, LLB Law: 1,187 applicants vying for 50 spots, B.Sc. Computer Science: 1,241 applicants for 200 places, and Pharm. (Doctor of Pharmacy): 967 applicants for 100 available spaces.

The university urged applicants with lower or average scores to explore alternative, equally marketable courses to improve their chances of admission.

Admission Distribution And Timeline

To ensure fairness across the state and the nation, the university said it is implementing a structured quota system – Local Government Quota (70%): Shared equally among the 11 LGAs of Gombe State to ensure community representation.

It noted that the National Merit (10%) is reserved for the highest-scoring candidates nationwide, regardless of origin, the Non-indigenes (10%) is allocated to students outside Gombe State to promote diversity, while the discretionary (10%) is for unique circumstances and special talents.

As detailed in the “VC PROF. YAUTA PRESS STATEMENT: All admission procedures must be concluded no later than October 31, 2026.

The university also confirmed that while the baseline UTME cut-off is 150 points for many programs, higher standards are applied to professional courses, with MBBS, Nursing, Law, and Pharmacy requiring a minimum of 200 points.

Professor Yauta concluded by commending Governor Inuwa Yahaya for his continued support in expanding the university’s infrastructure to better accommodate future student cohorts.
