Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has commended the Nigerian Army for its sustained efforts in combating crime and crude oil theft, saying the military’s operations have helped boost oil production and, by extension, increased revenue accruing to the country.
The governor made the remarks on Friday while receiving the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, who paid him a courtesy visit ahead of the Nigerian Army’s 163rd Anniversary Celebration, scheduled to be held in Rivers State.
Governor Fubara said the Nigerian Army has continued to play a critical role in protecting strategic national assets, particularly oil and gas facilities, through its operations against criminal elements involved in crude oil theft and illegal bunkering.
According to him, the improved security around oil facilities has translated into increased crude oil production, leading to a rise in national revenue.
The governor also praised the Army Chief for his leadership, particularly in strengthening security across the country and improving the welfare of officers and soldiers.
He expressed confidence that the Nigerian Army would continue to discharge its constitutional responsibility of safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and maintaining internal security.
Fubara noted that the decision to host the Army’s 163rd Anniversary Celebration in Rivers State, despite the security narratives that have surrounded the state in recent times, is a strong indication that Rivers is peaceful, stable, and safe.

He assured the Nigerian Army and other security agencies operating in the state of his administration’s continued support, stressing that security remains a shared responsibility.
The governor pledged that his administration would sustain its partnership with the military to ensure peace, security, and economic growth in the state and the country.
In his address, Shaibu said he was in Rivers State as part of activities marking the Nigerian Army’s 163rd Anniversary Celebration.
He disclosed that the event would attract Chiefs of Army Staff from 21 African countries, two former presidents, and Vice President Kashim Shettima, among other distinguished guests.
The Army Chief described Rivers State as a strategic partner to the Nigerian Army, commending the state government for its consistent support to the 6 Division, especially the upgrade of infrastructure and the provision of facilities for the anniversary celebration.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Fubara for his administration’s commitment to strengthening the operational capacity of the Nigerian Army in Rivers State.
