The Embassy of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau in The Gambia on Tuesday held a reception at Coco Ocean Hotel in Bijilo to commemorate the country’s 53rd independence anniversary.

The ceremony brought together Gambian government officials, diplomats, representatives of international organisations, security officials and members of the Guinea-Bissau community living in The Gambia.

The country’s ambassador to The Gambia, Luis Domingos Camara de Barros, welcomed guests and reflected on the country’s independence struggle, describing the anniversary as a reminder of the people’s determination to secure sovereignty, dignity and national progress.

He said Guinea-Bissau was pursuing institutional reforms and preparing for general elections scheduled for December 6, 2026. He also highlighted efforts to promote economic growth, modernise infrastructure and create opportunities for investment.

The ambassador expressed gratitude to President Adama Barrow, the Gambian government and the people of The Gambia for their hospitality towards Guinea-Bissau nationals living in the country.

Speaking on behalf of the Gambia government, Minister of Communication and Digital Economy Lamin Jabbi congratulated Guinea-Bissau on the anniversary and wished its government and people continued peace, stability and prosperity.

Minister  Jabbi said the two countries shared deep historical, cultural and family connections that went beyond formal diplomatic relations. He recalled that some Gambians supported the struggle for Guinea-Bissau’s independence, while others later contributed to the country’s public administration.

He also highlighted areas of cooperation between the two countries, including security, trade, energy, infrastructure, education and public health.

The minister cited President Barrow’s state visit to Guinea-Bissau in September 2025 as an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations. He said the two countries had signed a memorandum of understanding on security and trade cooperation during the visit.

Jabbi reaffirmed The Gambia’s commitment to working with Guinea-Bissau to strengthen their longstanding friendship and promote regional peace and development.

The reception ended with a toast to the continued friendship, cooperation and prosperity of both countries.
