‘His remand dangerous for democracy’ – Peter Obi reacts as Sowore lands in Kuje Prison

Daily Post about 2 hours 2 mins read

Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the remand of activist Omoyele Sowore in Kuje Correctional Centre, warning against actions that could undermine democratic freedoms and civic participation.

The development was disclosed in a statement posted on Obi’s official page.

According to Obi, while the judiciary remains responsible for determining legal disputes, authorities must ensure that state institutions are not perceived as being used to suppress dissenting voices or restrict civic engagement.

Obi stated that democracy thrives when citizens are able to freely express their views and participate in public discourse within the framework of the law.

“A thriving democracy does not survive on the silencing of opposing voices; rather, it is anchored on the robust protection of fundamental human rights, most notably the freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly, as enshrined in our Constitution,” he said.

He also noted that Nigeria is currently facing security and economic challenges, stressing the need for actions that promote national stability and social cohesion.

According to him, citizen activists, journalists and critics should not be viewed as threats to the state but as stakeholders whose contributions can strengthen accountability and governance.

“When we begin to treat citizen critics, activists and journalists as threats to state survival rather than as partners in building accountability, we signal a dangerous slide toward authoritarianism,” Obi stated.

He maintained that the country’s challenges require dialogue, inclusion and respect for democratic institutions.

Obi further called on relevant authorities to ensure that due process is followed and that Sowore’s constitutional rights are protected throughout the legal proceedings.

“I urge the relevant authorities to ensure that the rule of law is strictly adhered to, that Mr Sowore’s constitutional rights are fully protected, and that our security and judicial institutions are used solely for the impartial administration of justice,” he said.

Obi added that strengthening democratic institutions remains essential to national development and the protection of civil liberties.
