Hunter shot dead in Delta, family petition demands investigation, justice

Daily Post about 2 hours 2 mins read

Head of the Edariese Family, Olorogun Amrevuawho Peter, has formally petitioned the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in Otu-Jeremi, Delta State, urging authorities to conduct an impartial investigation over the death of a 31-year-old man, Lucky Omole.

Omole died after being shot by unidentified gunmen in Ovwodokpokpor-Olomu Community, Ughelli South local government area of Delta State.

The petitioner also requested that security men ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

The incident has sparked fresh calls for justice and a comprehensive police investigation.

The victim was attacked in broad daylight on the community’s main street in the presence of residents and fellow hunters who survived the incident and could provide eyewitness accounts.

The attack reportedly occurred on June 30, 2026.

Omole was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ovwian, in Udu local government area, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

His remains have since been deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Otu-Jeremi.

According to accounts from community sources, the deceased, who resided on Ogbe Street in Ovwodokpokpor-Olomu, was allegedly ambushed and shot while returning from a hunting expedition with other hunters, some of whom reportedly witnessed the attack.

In the petition, Peter, a former Chairman of the Delta State chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), described the killing as a “clear case of murder” and rejected claims linking the deceased to cult-related activities.

He maintained that Omole lived peacefully in Ovwodokpokpor-Olomu and had no connection with the alleged cult violence reported in the area on June 28, 2026.

Peter further urged the police to carry out a thorough and unbiased investigation, stressing that justice must prevail to restore public confidence and protect law-abiding residents.

The family head also alleged that some individuals claiming to be community leaders were involved in arming those who carried out the attack, claiming that similar violent incidents had occurred previously within the community, particularly against members of the Edariese Efejama family.

The Police Public Relations Officer, for the Delta command SP Bright Edafe, has not officially confirmed the incident.
