I feel bad not playing at 2026 World Cup – Osimhen

Victor Osimhen has spoken publicly for the first time about Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting that the disappointment has been difficult for both him and his Super Eagles teammates.

The expanded 2026 tournament, which features 48 teams for the first time in history, got underway last week, bringing together nations from across the globe.

However, Nigeria is notably absent from the competition despite Africa being allocated nine automatic qualification spots and an additional playoff berth.

The Super Eagles’ hopes of reaching the tournament ended after they finished second in their qualification group before suffering elimination at the hands of DR Congo in the continental playoffs.

The result condemned Nigeria to a second consecutive World Cup absence, extending a painful run for one of Africa’s traditional football powerhouses.

Speaking during a recent social media livestream, Osimhen did not hide his frustration over the missed opportunity.

“It’s bad, not just for me but for the rest of the guys,” Osimhen stated. “We’ve missed out twice in a row. Sometimes life happens, so we just have to keep moving.”

Nigeria last featured at the FIFA World Cup in 2018, meaning several members of the current squad, including Osimhen, are yet to experience football’s biggest stage.
