Former Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson Kenneth Okonkwo has accused Peter Obi of betraying him by instituting what he described as a frivolous defamation lawsuit, while contrasting Obi’s actions with those of Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking during an interview, Okonkwo said he ended his relationship with Obi in July 2024 after publicly declaring that he was no longer speaking on his behalf because he believed the former Anambra governor was “not decisive” and lacked the qualities required to lead Nigeria.
“As a public affairs analyst that I have been since 2009, I simply continued with my job. I made it public that I was no longer speaking for him because he’s not decisive. I’ve seen certain qualities in him that would make him unfit to be President,” he said.
Okonkwo recalled that although he had criticised Atiku more than Obi, the former vice president never took offence. Instead, he said Atiku recognised his passion for national development and his ability to contribute positively to Nigeria.
He also described Atiku as a “talent discoverer,” citing personalities such as Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Charles Soludo and Nasir El-Rufai as examples of people whose abilities he recognised.
Reacting to the lawsuit filed by Obi, Okonkwo questioned why someone he had worked closely with would resort to legal action against him.
“This is somebody I worked for and did everything for. Yet, after I left, he went to court with a frivolous defamation suit. Who is now the betrayer? Who is the disloyal?” he asked.
Addressing allegations that he defamed Obi, Okonkwo maintained that he merely repeated information given to him by identifiable sources and possessed documentary evidence to support his claims.
He further argued that many people had made harsher remarks about Obi without facing legal action, suggesting he was being targeted because he was a known public figure. Okonkwo insisted there was no defamation in his comments and declared he was ready to defend himself in court, saying, “Bring him on. Let him come.”
