Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has alleged that armed men believed to have come from Ilorin, Kwara State, invaded the Ibadan residence of traditional faith defender, Tani Olohun, in the early hours of Tuesday in an attempt to abduct him.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred at Ayegun Oleyo, Ibadan, where the armed men were said to have stormed Tani Olohun’s residence and attempted to take him away.
The development reportedly triggered tension and commotion in the neighbourhood as residents resisted the alleged attempt to whisk Tani Olohun away.
Igboho, reacting to the incident, said he was contacted around midnight by distressed neighbours of Tani Olohun, who raised the alarm over what they described as an attempt by unidentified armed men to abduct him.
He said the neighbours informed him that the men were allegedly from Ilorin, Kwara State, prompting him to move to the area with his people to ascertain what was happening.
“The distressed neighbours of Tani Olohun in Ayegun Oleyo contacted us at midnight about the attempt by some unidentified armed men, who allegedly came from Ilorin, Kwara State, to abduct him,” Igboho said.
According to him, his arrival at the scene revealed what he described as a disturbing situation, as Tani Olohun was allegedly found unconscious on the ground.
“I had to move there with my people to ascertain what was happening, only to discover Tani Olohun lying unconscious on the ground after being beaten to a stupor,” he alleged.
Igboho further alleged that the armed men also attacked another woman in the neighbourhood who had recently undergone a cesarean section.
“Another woman who recently had a cesarean operation was also attacked,” he said.
He also claimed that the armed men blocked the access road leading to the area during the alleged operation, restricting movement and making it difficult for people to reach the scene.
“The armed men blocked the access road, but we were able to rescue Tani Olohun and restore peace in the community,” Igboho said.
The alleged invasion reportedly led to a confrontation between the armed men and residents, who were said to have resisted the attempt to take Tani Olohun away.
Residents reportedly raised the alarm over the presence of the armed men in the community, while the situation generated panic among people living in the area.
Although the men were reportedly believed by residents to be police officers who had allegedly travelled from Ilorin, the exact identity of the officers, the reason for the attempted arrest and the authority under which they were operating remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged attack on Tani Olohun and the woman who reportedly recently underwent a cesarean section also remained unclear.
The incident has raised concerns among residents, particularly over the alleged use of force against Tani Olohun and the reported presence of armed men in the community at midnight.
Igboho said his intervention, alongside that of his men, enabled them to rescue Tani Olohun and prevent the situation from escalating.
He maintained that the immediate priority was to ensure Tani Olohun’s safety and restore calm to the community following the alleged incident.
“The armed men blocked the access road, but we were able to rescue Tani Olohun and restore peace in the community,” he reiterated.
The alleged incident could not be independently verified as of press time, while there was no immediate official statement from the police authorities confirming or denying the reported operation or responding to the allegations made by Igboho.
The community was, however, said to have returned to relative calm after Tani Olohun was reportedly rescued from the scene.
