Iheanacho reveals reason behind Super Eagles return

Daily Post about 2 hours 2 mins read

Super Eagles attacker Kelechi Iheanacho has revealed the main reason behind his return to the national team.

The player reaffirmed his unwavering dedication to the Super Eagles following his recall to the three-time African champions for an upcoming friendly match against Russia.

Before his selection for Tuesday’s friendly, the former Manchester City forward had been absent from international football for more than 16 months.

Iheanacho, who won the Golden Ball at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup, said he needed no external motivation to represent his country at the international level.

“I have maintained my involvement with the Super Eagles, and indeed the national team structure overall, for an extended period, progressing from the U-13 through U-15 and U-17 levels and subsequently to the Super Eagles,” Iheanacho said in an interview with the Super Eagles media department.

“My tenure has been considerable, and I am not returning to the national team due to external influences or circumstances. Rather, it is driven by the profound love and passion I possess for the sport.

“Representing the Super Eagles constitutes the aspiration of every Nigerian athlete. I have been fulfilling this ambition throughout my career, from junior competitions to the present level.

“Whether it involves five-a-side football or an invitation to the U-15 squad, I would participate because of my genuine passion.

“I am indifferent to external opinions. Whenever the coaching staff extends a call-up, I will respond affirmatively, and this represents a source of considerable satisfaction.

“I am genuinely pleased to be present and will relish the opportunity to collaborate with my teammates, with the expectation that we will deliver an exceptional performance on Tuesday.”

Iheanacho’s recall to the Super Eagles reflects his impressive form during the opening phase of the 2026-27 season, during which he has scored 11 goals and provided two assists in nine matches for Bursaspor, the club he joined on a free transfer following the expiration of his Celtic contract in the summer.
