Hosts Ikeja Golf Club has emerged champion of the 2026 edition of the Interclub Matchplay Tournament after defeating Abeokuta Golf Club by 43 1/2 points to the 21 1/2 accumulated by the Rock City team.
The two-day event which started on Friday, September 18 came to a flourishing end yesterday at the Ikeja Golf Club course.
According to organisers of the matchplay tournament, the purpose of the its introduction is to foster unity and bonding between Ikeja Golf Club and Abeokuta Golf Club.
Speaking at the sumptuous buffet served for all participants, Captain of the Ikeja Golf Club, Segun Odunuga, thanked members of the two clubs for making concerted efforts in sustaining the friendship that has existed between them.
“We thank our brothers and friends from the Abeokuta Golf Club for being with us these last few days. My prayers is that the cord that binds us together will never be broken,” he prayed.
Similarly, Captain of the Abeokuta Golf Club, Umar Bakare, was full of excitements and thanked the executive committee of the Ikeja Golf Club and its members for the cordial reception they treated members of his club to since they arived in Lagos last Friday.
“Honestly, we have been well taken care of by the management and members of the Ikeja Golf Club. But all the warm gesture ended immediately we walked into the golf course,” he joked
“We’re going back to Abeokuta with fond memories of the wonderful time we had at the Ikeja Golf Club and we promised to ‘retaliate’ when we have the opportunity of playing the host in the nearest future,” he added.
Ikeja Golf Club and Abeokuta Golf Club regularly hold friendly interclub match play events as sister clubs.
Also at the prize presentation ceremony, captains and vice captains of both clubs exchanged gifts to bring the event to befitting end.
