Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has promised to restore Nigeria’s petrol subsidy if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku made the pledge during a Facebook Live session while responding to questions about the subsidy removal and the financial burden it has placed on Nigerians.
According to him, he did not initially oppose the decision to remove the subsidy. However, he said he has since changed his position and is now questioning how the savings from the policy have been spent.
“I initially did not oppose the removal of the fuel subsidy. But now that it has been removed, where is the money? Where has the subsidy money gone? Has it been used to improve healthcare, education or security?”
Atiku further stated that, if elected, his administration would restore the subsidy and pursue those responsible for allegedly misappropriating subsidy funds.
“If I win the presidential election, I will restore the subsidy. And anyone who stole Nigeria’s subsidy funds must return the money.”
President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of the petrol subsidy during his inauguration on May 29, 2023. The decision immediately led to a significant increase in petrol prices, with transportation fares, food prices and other living costs also rising.
The Tinubu administration has consistently defended the policy, arguing that the subsidy had become too expensive for the government to continue funding and that the money could be redirected to other areas of national development.
