Insecurity: Senate cuts short break, reconvenes June 23 for State Police Bill

Daily Post about 2 hours 1 mins read

The Senate has cut short its end-of-session break and directed members to reconvene on Tuesday, June 23, with insecurity and the State Police Bill top on the agenda.

A notice circulated on Tuesday by the Clerk of the Senate, Dr Emmanuel Odo, on the directive of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stated that there were “pressing matters of urgent national importance, including national security”, which required immediate attention.

The notice urged senators to reconvene at the Red Chamber by 11am.

It was gathered that the reconvening is connected to the third reading and passage of the State Police Bill, which had already been passed by the House of Representatives.

On Thursday last week, while the House of Representatives passed the bill, the Senate only pushed it through second reading while voting was reserved until lawmakers resume in the first week of July.

The bill was referred to the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review, chaired by Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, for further legislative input.

The emergency reconvening is expected to allow the Senate to take crucial decisions on national security matters before the July resumption date.
