Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, IRGC, has warned that any fresh US attack on the country would trigger a new military response involving previously targeted and new objectives as well as weapons with different capabilities.
The warning came on Monday as tensions between Tehran and Washington remain unresolved nearly seven months into their conflict, with neither side appearing prepared to return to a full-scale war.
A spokesperson for the IRGC, Iran’s ideological military force, said the country’s defensive and counteroffensive strategy would undergo major changes if the United States launched another attack.
“There will certainly be significant changes in our defence and our counteroffensive” in the event of a new US attack, the spokesperson said.
He added, “We will introduce new weapons with new capabilities into the battlefield, and the world will be surprised.”
The IRGC spokesman further warned that Iran would expand its choice of targets, saying, “Our targets will not necessarily be the same as before either. We have new targets that have not yet been attacked.”
The Guards also said they were prepared for a prolonged conflict as tensions between the two countries continue.
Iran’s military central command had on Saturday accused the United States of preparing for another operation against Tehran, state television reported, although it provided no further details.
Meanwhile, direct fighting between Iran and the US has declined in recent days following an escalation at the end of last month.
However, tensions remain in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has continued sporadic attacks against commercial vessels. Both Tehran and Washington are also maintaining competing blockades in the strategic waterway as part of efforts to exert pressure on each other.
The conflict has also extended into Yemen, where the Iran-backed Houthi movement has captured additional territory from the Saudi-backed government.
The Houthis have also carried out attacks against Saudi Arabian targets, including in the capital, Riyadh.
