United States Vice President, JD Vance says Iran will not collect any tolls in the Strait of Hormuz.
Vance said this on Tuesday in an interview with the conservative podcaster, Michael Knowles.
He was defending the position of President Donald Trump’s administration on Iran as negotiations to fully end the war appear to have stalled out.
“I just want to be very clear here this is not going to end in a place where the Iranians are collecting tolls on ships going through the Strait of Hormuz.
“In fact, I feel quite confident that we’re not gonna have a tolled Strait of Hormuz in the future,” he said.
His remark came as Iranian officials continue to insist the opposite.
Iran’s Parliamentary Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Tuesday that passing through the Strait is free of charge only for 60 days.
Ghalibaf further stated that Iran will not give up its rights in the Strait of Hormuz under any circumstances.
“The Strait of Hormuz is valuable when traffic increases day by day, not less. We should not turn the Strait of Hormuz into our enemy,” he said.
Vance dismissed the signals from Iran’s own government about the negotiations, saying that they were trying to posture for their domestic audience.
