Fear has reportedly spread among commissioners and senior government officials in Jigawa State following an unannounced inspection of the State Secretariat by Governor Umar Namadi on Monday.
The governor’s surprise visit, the second of its kind since he assumed office in 2023, was aimed at assessing workers’ attendance, monitoring commitment to official duties across ministries and government agencies, and inspecting ongoing renovation work at the secretariat.
During the inspection, Governor Namadi moved from one ministry to another and found many offices locked, with only a handful of messengers and security personnel present.
The offices of the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of the Civil Service, and the Accountant General were all locked when the governor arrived. Several commissioners and permanent secretaries were also absent from their duty posts.
Out of the state’s 18 commissioners, only the Commissioner for Works was found in his office during the inspection. The permanent secretaries of the Ministries of Health and Livestock Development were also present.
The development has reportedly created uncertainty among members of the State Executive Council, with many officials said to be apprehensive over possible disciplinary measures following the governor’s findings.
Expressing disappointment over the level of absenteeism, Governor Namadi described the situation as unacceptable and warned that his administration would not tolerate indiscipline, absenteeism, or any form of misconduct in the civil service.
He stressed that every public servant has a responsibility to be at work and provide efficient services to the people of Jigawa State.
