No fewer than six children have lost their lives after a lightning strike hit a groundnut farm during a heavy rainstorm in Ganye Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The incident was reported by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security analyst covering the Lake Chad region, citing security sources.
According to the report, the tragedy occurred at about 4:00. on Saturday in Dadiri Village, where several children were reportedly working on a groundnut farm owned by one Musa Maude when lightning struck after hours of rainfall.
The report stated that the Chairman of the Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF, in Ganye, Mallam Salau Iliya, alerted the Ganye Police Station shortly after the incident.
Police officers led by the Divisional Police Officer reportedly rushed to the scene, where nine children were found unconscious.
“The Divisional Police Officer immediately led a team to the scene, where nine victims were found unconscious. Three later regained consciousness, while six others were rushed to the Cottage Hospital in Ganye, where they were confirmed dead by a medical doctor,” the report stated.
The victims who lost their lives were identified as Aliyu Suleiman, 10year old; Jafar Suleiman, 8tear old; Abdurrahman Musa, 7year old; Bilkisu Jibrilla, 10year old; Musa Ahmadu, 9year old; and Auwalu Nuhu, 11year old.
According to the report, three other children survived the lightning strike after regaining consciousness.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Cottage Hospital mortuary in Ganye for autopsy.
The incident has left residents of Dadiri Village devastated, with families mourning the sudden loss of the children following the rainstorm.
Meanwhile, the Adamawa State Criminal Investigation Department has commenced investigations into the incident.
