Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has presided over the first plenary meeting of the Fifth Committee of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Declaring the meeting open, Ambassador Ibrahim expressed appreciation to Member States for the confidence placed in him and Nigeria, following his election as Chair of the Fifth Committee for the 81st Session.

Ambassador Ibrahim reaffirmed the importance of transparency, accountability and effective oversight in strengthening trust in the United Nations.

He said the Bureau, elected on June 2, would work collectively to ensure that the Committee’s responsibilities are successfully and timely discharged.

The Nigerian envoy also drew the Committee’s attention to the Secretariat’s note on the organisation of work, particularly provisions relating to the dates of the session and submission of membership lists.

During the deliberations, Member States reiterated the need to carefully scrutinise budget proposals and their implications for programme delivery, while pursuing greater efficiency without undermining the United Nations’ capacity to discharge its responsibilities.

They stressed that the development pillar and the priorities of developing countries must receive due attention and adequate resources to ensure the effective implementation of agreed mandates.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of equitable geographical representation among United Nations staff, consistent with the UN Charter and the need for a representative and balanced Secretariat.

The Fifth Committee is responsible for the administrative and budgetary affairs of the United Nations, making its deliberations central to the financing and effective functioning of the Organisation.
