The Babiito Clan has officially elected journalist Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma to ascend the throne as the new Omukama (King) of the Tooro Kingdom.
Prince Edward’s election follows the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, whose sudden passing plunged the Tooro Kingdom into mourning and set in motion the process of identifying his successor.
The succession committee of the Babiito Clan selected Prince Edward as the next heir to the Tooro throne, paving the way for his enthronement in accordance with the kingdom’s traditions and succession procedures.
Prince Edward is the son of the late Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and the grandson of the late Omukama Sir George David Rukidi Kamurasi III, giving him a direct connection to the Tooro royal lineage.
He is widely known to the Ugandan public through his journalism career at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), where he has worked as a prominent journalist and News Tonight presenter.
His election marks a significant transition for the Tooro Kingdom as it prepares to bid farewell to Omukama Oyo, who ascended the throne at a young age and served as the kingdom’s cultural leader for several years.
Prince Edward is now expected to undergo the traditional and ceremonial processes leading to his formal enthronement as the new Omukama of Tooro.
His ascension will usher in a new chapter for the kingdom, with the new king expected to uphold Tooro’s cultural heritage, traditions and unity while providing leadership to the kingdom and its people.
