Kano State Government has announced Tuesday as a public holiday to mark the beginning of the 1448 Islamic New Year.

The declaration was contained in a statement released on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya.

He said the government approved the work-free day to allow residents observe the importance of the new Islamic calendar year.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, in the message, congratulated Muslims in the state and across Nigeria for witnessing another new year, which starts with the sighting of the crescent moon of Muharram.

He called on residents to use the period to reflect on their actions over the past year and renew their commitment to good values.

“The Governor calls on the people of the state and the Muslim Ummah to reflect on their actions over the past year and to use the occasion to offer special prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity for the state and the country at large,” the statement said.

The governor also urged citizens to pray for peace and economic growth, especially at a time when the country is facing different challenges.

He further assured the people that his administration remains committed to improving their welfare through policies that will boost development, improve infrastructure, and support social wellbeing.

Following the declaration, all government offices, public schools, and state-owned institutions will remain closed on Tuesday, while normal activities will resume on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
