Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has warned political parties and their supporters against hate speech, provocation, intimidation and violence as the 2027 governorship campaign officially begins.
The governor issued the warning through his Director-General of Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, during a press conference in Kano to mark the start of the campaign.
Yusuf urged political parties and candidates to focus on their ideas, policies, records and programmes instead of insults and attacks on opponents.
He said, “Let us compete on the basis of ideas, policies, records and programmes rather than insults, intimidation or violence.”
The governor also warned against destroying property or taking any action that could threaten the peace currently enjoyed in the state.
He asked his supporters to remain disciplined, respect different opinions and avoid being provoked into actions that could disrupt public order.
Yusuf also appealed to bloggers, media influencers, journalists and social media users to verify information before publishing it. He warned them against spreading fake news, rumours, inflammatory content and misinformation.
The governor called on security agencies to remain professional, impartial and alert throughout the campaign. He also urged political parties and campaign groups to co-operate with security agencies and obey the law.
Yusuf assured residents that his administration would continue to provide public services and work on development projects despite the political activities.
He said Kano was bigger than any political party or individual, noting that politicians would remain citizens of the state after the election.
“Let us campaign with respect, compete with ideas, disagree without violence and put the interest of Kano above political differences,” he said.
