KADUNA — The management of Kaduna State University (KASU) has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), KASU branch, to suspend its ongoing warning strike, citing steps being taken by the Kaduna State Government to address the union’s concerns.
The university, in a statement signed by its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, on Friday, acknowledged the concerns of academic staff and the anxiety caused among students and parents by the disruption of academic activities.
It urged ASUU-KASU to give the ongoing dialogue an opportunity to succeed, particularly in view of what it described as “concrete steps” being taken by the state government to resolve the outstanding issues.
The management also acknowledged the intervention of the university’s Visitor and Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, saying his administration had continued to engage with issues affecting the institution.
According to the statement, the governor had constituted a nine-member committee, chaired by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abubakar Sani Sambo, to consider the issues raised by the union and make appropriate recommendations within one month.
“Management appreciates these interventions and the willingness of the Visitor to keep the doors of dialogue open.
“We believe this presents a genuine opportunity for government, the university and the unions to work through the outstanding matters in a structured and constructive manner,” the statement said.
The university management warned that continued disruption of the academic calendar could have implications for students, their families and their future plans.
It therefore appealed to the union to reconsider its position and allow the dialogue to continue, while assuring staff and students of its commitment to finding a lasting solution to the issues.
“To our students and parents, we understand the uncertainty and concern that disruption to academic activities creates.
“Management assures you that every reasonable effort is being made to achieve an early resolution and ensure the restoration of normal academic activities,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
The management further assured that it would continue to engage with the state government and the unions, while placing the welfare of staff and students at the centre of its decisions.
