The Chancellor and Proprietor of Anchor University, Ayobo, Lagos, Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi, has reappointed former Governor Babatunde Fashola’s aide and University of Lagos Professor, Tunde Ope-Davies, as a member of the university’s Governing Council. The reappointment, which took immediate effect, is for another term of four years.
The reappointment, according to a statement from the university, is a testament to Professor Ope-Davies’s invaluable service during the university’s formative decade, particularly in his unique capacity as the representative of the Host Community, an institution builder and thoroughbred university administrator.
It said, “Since the university was founded 10 years ago, Prof. Ope-Davies has been instrumental in bridging the gap between academia and the wider Lagos community, embedding Anchor University firmly within the fabric of its immediate environment.
“As a distinguished scholar from the University of Lagos, and often described as the Father of Digital Humanities in Nigeria, Prof. Ope-Davies has worked tirelessly to ensure that Anchor University is not just a centre of learning, but a partner in the development of its host community.”
According to him, his philosophy of connecting “gown to town has translated into tangible initiatives that have enhanced the university’s relevance and deepened its roots in the region.”
The statement stated that Ope-Davies’ notable contributions include pioneering the institutionalisation of community engagement, most famously through the establishment of the university’s first Distinguished Public Lecture series delivered by the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.
“This initiative was specifically designed to contribute intellectual resources to public debates, foster relationships with local stakeholders, and position the university as a catalyst for national development. He has also promoted international collaborations between Anchor University and some institutions abroad.
“He has equally extended his Digital Humanities initiative at the University of Lagos to Anchor University,” it stated.
In his response to the reappointment, Ope-Davies expressed gratitude to the chancellor for the confidence reposed in him. He reiterated his dedication to fostering the relationship between the university and its environment, ensuring that the institution continues to thrive as a beacon of knowledge that serves the needs of its immediate community and the nation at large.
The reappointment, he said, signals continuity and stability for the Anchor University Council, as it prepares to build on the “solid foundation” laid over the last ten years to take the institution to new heights.
