BIRNIN KEBBI — Suspected Lakurawa terrorists have killed two soldiers and a Chinese national in an attack on construction workers in Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The attackers reportedly infiltrated the area from Kebbe Local Government Area of neighbouring Sokoto State and launched a surprise attack on the workers on Thursday.

The spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, SP Bashir Usman, confirmed the attack in a telephone interview.

Usman said the victims were among construction workers engaged on the Badagry Super Highway project in Kebbi State, adding that the two soldiers were providing security for the Chinese national and other workers when the attackers struck.

He said the attackers killed two soldiers and the Chinese national, while some other people sustained injuries.

“Yes, the attack occurred, but the terrorists are not from Kebbi State but infiltrated the state through a village with a border to Kebbi State,” Usman said.

He explained that the identities of the deceased soldiers could not be disclosed because they were military personnel and not members of the police.

The police spokesperson described the attack as barbaric and unwarranted, adding that joint security agencies had launched a manhunt for the suspected attackers.

He said security operatives were pursuing the suspected Lakurawa members responsible for the attack.

Lakurawa, a relatively new armed group reported to be operating around parts of north-western Nigeria and the Niger Republic border area, has previously been linked to attacks in the region.
