LASBCA partially demolishes illegal structures in Surulere

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has partially demolished illegal structures behind Barracks Bus Stop in Surulere.

LASBCA  made this known in a statement by its Director of Public Affairs, Mr Adu Ademuyiwa, on Friday.

The agency said that the enforcement followed repeated statutory notices and the owners’ failure to comply with building regulations.

It said that the affected structures contravened the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law and the approved building regulations.

According to LASBCA, inspections revealed that the buildings exceeded approved setback limits by encroaching on spaces reserved for safety, accessibility and proper physical planning.

The agency also said the developers failed to produce valid statutory approval documents for the developments.

It added that the buildings violated the state’s building codes and construction regulations, posing risks to lives, adjoining property and the environment.

LASBCA said it had earlier served the developers with contravention and enforcement notices, directing them to stop the illegal constructions.

It said that despite several notices and opportunities to regularise the developments, the owners failed to comply, necessitating the partial demolition of the offending sections.

The agency said the exercise formed part of its statutory mandate to monitor building developments, prevent illegal construction and ensure compliance with approved building standards.

It reiterated that enforcement actions were aimed at protecting public safety and promoting sustainable urban development.

LASBCA urged property owners, developers and contractors to obtain the required planning permits and building approvals before commencing construction and to adhere strictly to approved plans.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to sustained monitoring and enforcement across the state.

It warned that anyone disregarding statutory notices and building regulations would face appropriate sanctions.

It advised Lagos State residents to report illegal developments and distressed buildings in their communities to help the agency ensure a safe and well-regulated built environment.
