The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has confirmed that three separate road incidents occurred in different parts of the state in the early hours of Saturday, August 1, with no fatalities recorded.
A statement by the agency said the incidents, which happened at Olupese Bus Stop, Aswani Bus Stop and Oba Ogunji Road, were swiftly attended to by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) in collaboration with the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Nigeria Police and other emergency responders.
According to the government, the coordinated emergency response ensured the safety of residents and the quick restoration of traffic across the affected routes.
The first incident occurred at about 12:07 a.m. at Olupese Bus Stop inward Oshodi, where a truck conveying granite developed a problem after its rear tyre became trapped in a pothole, causing an obstruction on the road.
Preliminary findings showed that the poor condition of the road contributed to the incident.
LASEMA said no life was lost and no injuries were recorded.
The Agency immediately deployed its Eagle Response Team to divert traffic while its heavy-duty recovery equipment, Super Metro, was mobilised to remove the stranded truck.
Recovery operations were still ongoing as of the time the statement was issued, while traffic officials continued to manage the flow of vehicles to reduce disruption.
Barely an hour later, at about 12:59 a.m., another incident was recorded at Aswani Bus Stop inward Iyana Isolo.
A Sienna vehicle with registration number ABJ-515DQ collided with an oncoming truck with an unknown registration number. The impact forced the truck off its lane and onto a culvert, causing an obstruction.
Although no death was recorded, three people, comprising two adult women and one adult man, sustained injuries in the crash.
Emergency responders from LASEMA’s Lagos Response Team (LRT), LRU Medics, LASAMBUS, the Nigeria Police and LASTMA immediately attended to the victims. The injured persons received first aid at the scene before they were taken to hospital for further treatment.
Traffic was diverted while a private towing vehicle was engaged to recover the damaged vehicles.
LASEMA disclosed that by 2:45 a.m., both vehicles had been successfully removed from the scene.
The truck was recovered with the Agency’s Super Metro and handed over to LASTMA, while the Sienna vehicle was released to police officers from Aswani Police Station. The operation was thereafter concluded and all emergency responders returned to their respective bases.
Another road accident was recorded at about 1:19 a.m. on Oba Ogunji Road.
The incident involved a concrete mixer truck belonging to the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and a green Volkswagen bus with registration number FKJ 424KA.
Preliminary investigations attributed the accident to overspeeding by the Volkswagen bus.
LASEMA said no death or injury was recorded.
The agency said it’s response team secured the accident scene, carried out on-site mechanical repairs on the concrete mixer truck, and later evacuated both vehicles from the roadway using the Agency’s tow truck.
The Volkswagen bus was subsequently handed over to its owner, while the road was completely cleared and reopened to motorists.
Commenting on the incidents, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, commended all emergency responders for their professionalism and prompt response.
He also advised motorists to obey traffic rules, avoid speeding and promptly report damaged roads to the appropriate authorities.
“The Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to zero tolerance for loss of life on Lagos roads. The synergy between LASEMA, LASAMBUS, LASTMA, Police, and other stakeholders ensured that these incidents were managed with minimal impact. We will continue to invest in equipment, training, and rapid response to safeguard Lagosians,” he stated.
The Lagos State Government also appealed to motorists to avoid driving against traffic, overloading vehicles and engaging in reckless driving, especially during late-night hours.
Residents were encouraged to report emergencies through LASEMA’s toll-free emergency lines for prompt response.
