LASTMA moves to curb crashes involving dispatch riders in Lagos

Daily Post 17 days 2 mins read

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, has intensified efforts to address the rising incidence of road crashes involving dispatch riders across major routes in Lagos State.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday, the agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed that new measures are being implemented to enhance compliance with traffic regulations among riders.

He explained that the authority has initiated engagement with unions representing dispatch riders as part of a wider safety awareness and enforcement strategy.

“There are plans to convene a stakeholders’ engagement with courier service operators and riders to promote strict adherence to safety regulations.

“The engagement will focus on encouraging riders to prioritise not only the safety of other road users, but also their personal wellbeing,” he said.

Bakare-Oki reiterated that the Lagos State Government remains committed to safeguarding lives and property through strengthened road safety initiatives.

He noted that the planned forum would bring together rider unions, logistics companies, and other key stakeholders to address recurring safety challenges and reinforce compliance with traffic laws.

The LASTMA boss also highlighted the agency’s school outreach programme, aimed at promoting road safety awareness and responsible behaviour among young people.

According to him, the initiative is designed to instil positive attitudes early, in line with the agency’s mandate to ensure safer roads through public education.

He added that between January and March, the programme reached approximately 38 to 39 per cent of schools across the state.
