African travellers planning trips to Spain in 2026 should check their nationality’s visa requirements carefully, as Spain applies the European Union’s common Schengen entry rules rather than maintaining a separate visa-free policy for selected African countries.
Under the current rules, travellers from visa-exempt countries can visit Spain and other Schengen countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period, provided they meet the other entry requirements.
However, several African countries listed in some online reports as having visa-free access to Spain are actually classified by the EU as visa-required countries.
Which African countries are visa-exempt?
Mauritius and Seychelles are among the African countries whose citizens are exempt from the Schengen visa requirement for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
This means eligible citizens can travel to Spain for purposes such as tourism or business without first obtaining a Schengen visa, although they must still satisfy Spain’s border-entry requirements.
Travellers may be required to show a valid passport, evidence of the purpose of their trip, accommodation or travel arrangements and sufficient financial means.
