MACBAN lifts ban on suspension of cattle movement to Plateau market

Daily Post about 2 hours 3 mins read

Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, has lifted a temporary suspension it placed on Fulani traders supplying cattle to the Kara Livestock Market in the Bukuru area of the state.

The organization had, on October 6, placed the ban following an attack on traders coming from the market, where unidentified gunmen opened fire on a commercial vehicle at the Bukuru Total roundabout axis in Jos South Local Government Area.

It could be recalled that a bus was conveying 20 traders returning from the Kara Livestock Market in Bukuru heading to Rafin Bauna Village in Bassa Local Government Area, when it was attacked by the gunmen, leaving one person dead and seven others injured.

Another trader also died while receiving treatment in a medical facility two days later.

As a result of the attack, MACBAN suspended the supply of cattle to the market from October 6 to 20.

The directive, which was issued by the state Chairman of the organization, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, was addressed to Fulani leaders, Ardos and cattle owners across the state after an emergency meeting.

At the meeting, the leaders condemned what they described as targeted and incessant attacks on members of the Fulani community.

However, following a mandate by the Plateau State government to security agencies to investigate the attack and a vow to bring the perpetrators to book, MACBAN, in a statement on Sunday, rescinded its decision and suspended the ban.

Babayo also stated that Fulani leaders and cattle owners had also appealed to the organization to reconsider the suspension as it would affect their business and source of livelihood.

The statement reads:

“Following the communiqué directing the temporary suspension of the movement of cattle to the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market from 6 October to 20 October 2026, the leadership of the Fulani community and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, Plateau State chapter, held further consultations with community leaders and stakeholders.

“After receiving numerous appeals from members of the Fulani community, particularly from those facing urgent personal and family challenges, including illness, financial hardship, and other unavoidable circumstances requiring the sale of cattle, the leadership carefully reviewed the situation.

“Having considered these genuine concerns, it has been unanimously resolved that the earlier suspension is hereby lifted with immediate effect.

“Accordingly, all Fulani cattle owners and herders in the affected Local Government Areas of Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Bokkos, Mangu, Jos South, and other parts of Plateau State are hereby permitted to resume taking their cattle to the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market beginning Sunday, 11 October 2026, instead of waiting until 20 October 2026 as previously announced.

“This decision was taken purely on humanitarian grounds and in response to the genuine needs of our members.

“However, all cattle owners and herders are strongly advised to remain vigilant, cooperate fully with security agencies, and strictly avoid any act capable of undermining peace and public order.

“The Fulani community expresses its sincere appreciation to all security agencies for the support and professionalism demonstrated during this difficult period.

“We particularly commend the officers and men of Operation Enduring Peace for their prompt intervention, dedication, and commitment to protecting lives and maintaining peace.

“We reaffirm our commitment to peaceful coexistence, respect for the rule of law, and continued cooperation with all security agencies.

“We also urge the relevant authorities to sustain efforts towards ensuring the safety and security of all citizens travelling to and from the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market.”
