Motorists face prosecution over reckless driving, excessive speeding on Coastal Road

Daily Post about 2 hours 2 mins read

The Lagos State Government has cautioned motorists using the Coastal Road against excessive speeding and reckless driving, warning that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted in line with the law.

The warning followed a fatal crash along the Coastal Road inward Eko Hotel on Friday, which claimed one life and left three others seriously injured.

The accident involved a grey Lexus Jeep 350 with registration number LSD 554 KV.

Preliminary security information indicated that the vehicle lost control, rammed into a roadside pole and overturned, leaving three occupants seriously injured and another person dead.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, who were monitoring traffic around the Coastal Road axis, responded to the scene, secured the area and facilitated emergency intervention.

With assistance from Good Samaritans, the three injured victims were brought out of the wreckage and conveyed to Duck-Yard Hospital within the Military Zone for urgent treatment.

Security personnel from Victoria Island also joined the response, while LASTMA officers cleared the damaged vehicle from the carriageway to prevent another accident and restore normal traffic flow.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise greater caution, control their speed and obey traffic regulations.

Bakare-Oki warned that excessive speed, reckless driving and loss of control could have severe consequences for motorists and other road users.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, appealed to motorists using the Coastal Road and other routes across Lagos to prioritise safety over speed.

Osiyemi said motorists who violate speed regulations or put the lives of other road users at risk would be apprehended and prosecuted according to the law.

“The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation urges all motorists plying the Coastal Road and across all Lagos roads to put lives before speed. Excessive speeding and reckless driving place motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other road users at grave risk.

“Motorists who disregard speed regulations or endanger lives will be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” Osiyemi said in a statement.

The commissioner urged motorists to reduce their speed, remain vigilant and ensure that other road users also arrive at their destinations safely.
