Two MPs have raised alarm over a wave of brutal killings Kiruhura and Kazo districts, reporting that at least 15 people have been killed in the areas in recent weeks.
Hon. Genesio Tumuramye (NRM, Kashongi County) told Parliament during plenary sitting on Tuesday, 29 September 2026 that five people, including a child, had been killed in their homes in Kitura County in Kashongi County in the past month.
“Those people were killed in the night in their homes,” Tumuramye said, calling on the Ministry of Internal Affairs and security agencies to investigate the killings and establish why they were occurring.
He also asked government to consider compensating or assisting the affected families.
Hon. Dan Atwijukire (NRM, Kazo County) also told Parliament that the situation in his constituency was even more alarming, with 10 people killed between 17 August and 27 September 2026.
Atwijukire said six of the victims were killed using hammers, while others were killed through slaughtering, strangulation and other forms of violence.
“The target is women and young children,” Atwijukire said.
He said some suspects had been arrested and, in one case, suspects confessed to killing an elderly woman after learning that she had received Shs1.5 million from a community group.
Atwijukire said the suspects allegedly shared the money among themselves after the killing, but the murders had continued despite the arrests.
He called for the Ministry of Internal Affairs to convene a high-level meeting in the affected areas to reassure residents and address the insecurity.
“People are sleepless. They are very uncomfortable,” Kimosho said, also calling for consideration of compensation for the affected families.
Responding to the MPs, Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business Dr Crispus Kiyonga conveyed government’s condolences to the families and communities affected by the killings.
Kiyonga said the President had previously provided financial assistance to families affected by such tragic incidents and indicated that similar assistance would be provided.
“Whenever these tragic events have happened, the President has normally extended some money to help the families during the difficult time of the burial, and I’m sure that will be done,” Kiyonga said.
However, Kiyonga also urged MPs to work with communities to strengthen vigilance, arguing that security agencies alone could not prevent killings in every household.
“It would appear in some parts of the country, these senseless and brutal actions have taken a rising trend. The security alone, without the vigilance of the population, cannot effectively and quickly bring this to an end,” he said.
Kiyonga urged communities to remain vigilant and work with the police and, where necessary, the army to help stop the killings.
He assured the MPs that government would work with affected communities to bring the situation under control.
