The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a nationwide public alert over the sale and distribution of an unregistered menopause supplement, Menofix Capsules, warning Nigerians not to purchase or use the product as it is being removed from the market.
The agency said the product, marketed by PureEve as a hormone-free herbal and multivitamin supplement for women experiencing perimenopause and menopause, is not registered with NAFDAC despite being widely advertised and sold through online platforms and retail outlets across the country.
NAFDAC explained that the alert followed a complaint concerning the sale of the product and reports of possible liver-related adverse effects associated with some of its ingredients.
Following investigations, the agency confirmed that Menofix Capsules has never been registered by NAFDAC and is therefore not authorised for sale, distribution or use in Nigeria.
The regulator also cautioned consumers not to confuse the unregistered product with two legitimately approved products bearing similar names — Menofix Herbal Capsule (NAFDAC Registration No. A7-103321L) and Menofix Powder, both of which are duly registered with the agency.
NAFDAC said it has directed all its zonal directors and state coordinators to step up surveillance and immediately remove the unregistered product from circulation wherever it is found.
The agency urged distributors, retailers, healthcare providers and members of the public to remain vigilant and avoid stocking, selling or consuming the product. It also advised anyone in possession of Menofix Capsules to discontinue its use and submit any remaining stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.
Consumers who have used the product and experienced any adverse reactions were encouraged to seek immediate medical attention and report such incidents through NAFDAC’s official pharmacovigilance reporting channels.
The latest alert forms part of NAFDAC’s ongoing campaign to eliminate unregistered and potentially harmful medicines from the Nigerian market and safeguard public health.
