Nasarawa: Police ask parties to reschedule October 10 rallies

Daily Post about 2 hours 2 mins read

The Nasarawa State Police Command has appealed to political parties to reschedule rallies and other political gatherings planned for October 10.

The command said the appeal was necessary because the North Central Grassroots Mobilisation Movement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Lafia Square.

This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by SP Ramhan Nansel, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mr Shetima Muhammed.

Nansel said the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was expected to attend the APC rally.

He said rescheduling other political activities planned for the same day would enable the police and other security agencies to make adequate security arrangements for the event.

According to him, the measure would also help prevent possible clashes between supporters of different political parties and avert attempts by hoodlums to hijack political activities.

He added that it would facilitate the smooth movement of the First Lady and other dignitaries expected at the rally.

“The Command recognises and respects the constitutional rights of all political parties to freedom of association, peaceful assembly, and political participation.

“However, in the interest of public safety and peaceful conduct of political activities, the Command urges all political stakeholders to cooperate with this advisory,” he said.

Nansel reiterated the command’s commitment to providing a level playing field for all political parties and ensuring that political activities were conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.

He appreciated political parties, their supporters and members of the public for their understanding and cooperation.
