The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced the process of selecting candidates for the House of Representatives and Senate seats in Bayelsa State through direct primaries.
Solomon Ogba, chairman of the APC National Assembly Electoral Panel for the state, announced this during a press briefing on Saturday.
Ogba said the panel and its members have arrived in the state and are ready to oversee a credible exercise.
He disclosed that the party was relying on Section 84(2) of the Electoral Act for the direct primaries.
“We have painstakingly selected people of proven integrity who will conduct the elections in all the wards, local government areas and federal constituencies,” he said.
The chairman assured stakeholders that the process would be conducted with fairness and transparency, and called on all parties to support the effort.
He commended the Bayelsa State government and its people for providing a peaceful atmosphere and a level playing field.
According to the panel, sensitive election materials have already been distributed to polling areas across the state.
Ogba revealed that most aspirants who underwent screening in Abuja for the National Assembly positions have been cleared to participate.
He noted ongoing consensus-building efforts in several constituencies, which are expected to make the primaries run smoothly.
He explained that the electoral panel did not conduct the screening but would ensure that only cleared aspirants appear on the lists at the voting centres.
Delegates will see the final list of eligible aspirants at their respective wards when they arrive for the primaries.
Meanwhile, the chairman declined to provide details on the specific number of aspirants cleared per constituency, saying the numbers would be available at the polling units rather than during the press briefing.
The exercise is expected to produce the APC’s candidates for the National Assembly elections in the state.
