Navy dismantles illegal refinery, destroys site in Bonny

By Kingsley Omonobi

ABUJA — The Nigerian Navy has dismantled an illegal refining site and destroyed its equipment at Promise Land Community along Nanabie Creek in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The operation was carried out by the Forward Operating Base, FOB, Bonny, as part of efforts to disrupt illegal refining activities and deny criminal operators infrastructure used to process and store stolen crude oil.

Director of Information, Nigerian Navy, Commodore Abiodun Folorunsho, disclosed this on Friday, saying the illegal refining site was discovered on September 30 following credible intelligence.

According to him, the site contained one large cooking pot and three large storage tanks believed to have been intended for illegal refining activities.

“On 2 October 2026, the Commanding Officer, FOB Bonny, Captain SMC Umeh, led a team to the location, where the illegal refining site and associated equipment were destroyed in accordance with established regulations,” he said.

Folorunsho said the operation represented another disruption of illegal refining capacity within the Bonny area, particularly through the removal of infrastructure that could be used to process and store stolen crude oil.

He said the operation followed recent activities by FOB Bonny under Operation Delta Sentinel, which uncovered substantial volumes of suspected stolen crude oil and associated illegal refining infrastructure within its area of operations.

“The Nigerian Navy has continued to strengthen surveillance and monitoring across the area to prevent the establishment or reactivation of illegal refining sites and deny criminal operators the infrastructure required to sustain crude oil theft and related activities,” he said.
