LAGOS — The Nigerian Navy has intercepted 500 litres of products suspected to be illegally sourced Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and substances suspected to be Cannabis sativa in Folu Community, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.
The Director of Naval Information, Navy Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, disclosed this on Wednesday.
Folorunsho said the interception was carried out by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Lekki as part of ongoing efforts to curb the illegal trade and storage of petroleum products and the proliferation of illicit drugs within the base’s area of operation.
He said the suspects fled the scene before they could be apprehended by the naval personnel.
According to him, the recovered petroleum products and suspected narcotic substances were secured and transported to the base for further investigation and necessary action in line with established procedures.
Folorunsho said the operation underscored the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to combating criminal activities capable of undermining national economic interests, public safety and security within the maritime environment.
He added that the Navy would intensify surveillance and enforcement operations across its areas of responsibility to deter illegal oil-related activities and other forms of criminality.
“The interception forms part of the Nigerian Navy’s broader campaign against economic sabotage, illicit trafficking and other threats to Nigeria’s maritime security,” he said.
