Inflated balloons, often associated with celebrations at social gatherings, have emerged as a new concern in the fight against drug abuse following reports of their alleged use to conceal and distribute intoxicating substances at some adult events.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Rivers State Command, disclosed that drug users are adopting unconventional methods, including the use of balloons, cakes, and fake beverage containers, to hide substances.

The Deputy Commander, Operations, NDLEA Rivers State Command, Obedeke Kennedy, revealed this during a media briefing in Port Harcourt.

Displaying some of the substances seized by the command in the last six months, Kennedy said the use of balloons was among the emerging tactics being adopted by individuals involved in substance abuse.

He explained that some individuals allegedly use balloons to conceal substances such as nitrous oxide, which are later released during social gatherings for inhalation and intoxicating effects.

The command also raised concerns over the concealment of liquid substances in containers designed to resemble popular bottled drinks.

Kennedy further highlighted the practice of mixing cannabis with baked products, including cakes, as another method used to conceal the consumption of illicit substances.

The Rivers State Commander of the NDLEA, Offor Onyeso, who also addressed journalists, disclosed that the command arrested 242 suspects within the last six months.

He said the figure comprised 192 males and 49 females, while a total of 146.181 kilogrammes of illicit substances were seized during the period.

Onyeso added that 23 drug users were treated and rehabilitated at the NDLEA facility as part of efforts aimed at recovery and reintegration.

He further revealed that 61 suspects had been convicted, while 82 cases remained pending before the Federal High Court.

The NDLEA urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities linked to drug abuse and trafficking. The command stressed that drug concealment methods continue to evolve, making public awareness and cooperation essential in the fight against substance abuse and the protection of communities.
