NICArb announces leadership transition as Ajogwu steps down, Omonuwa takes over

The Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (NICArb) has announced a leadership transition, ushering in a new phase in the administration of the professional arbitration body.

Disclosing this in a statement signed by Shola Oshodi-John, FCArb, Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, the council said Professor Fabian Ajogwu, OFR, SAN, FCArb, will step down as President and Chairman of the Governing Council effective June 30, 2026, after years of service marked by institutional development and expanded visibility for the organisation.

The Institute said Professor Ajogwu’s tenure was defined by efforts that strengthened its structures, enhanced its professional standing, and supported the achievement of key strategic goals.

The Council expressed appreciation for his contributions, describing his leadership as significant to NICArb’s growth and development.

Following his exit, the Governing Council announced the appointment of Mr. Omoruyi A. Omonuwa, OFR, SAN, FCArb, as the new President and Chairman, effective July 1, 2026.

It said Mr. Omonuwa brings extensive professional experience and a strong commitment to arbitration practice and alternative dispute resolution (ADR), expressing confidence in his capacity to lead the institution into its next phase of growth.

In a goodwill message, Professor Ajogwu expressed confidence in the incoming leadership, describing Mr. Omonuwa as well-suited for the role.

“I have every confidence in the Learned Senior Advocate and Distinguished Arbitrator, Mr. Omoruyi A. Omonuwa’s ability to lead NICArb into its next phase of growth and development,” he said.

He added that Omonuwa’s integrity, experience, and dedication to the institution’s objectives would support continued progress and stability within NICArb.

The Governing Council urged members, partners, and stakeholders to support the incoming leadership as it assumes responsibility for the organisation’s affairs.

NICArb, established in 1979 and incorporated in 1988, is Nigeria’s leading professional body for arbitration and alternative dispute resolution. It is dedicated to promoting ADR practice, training professionals, and maintaining ethical standards in the field, with recognition as a Certified Mediator Training Program (CMTP) by the International Mediation Institute (IMI).
