The Niger State Government, with support from the African Climate Foundation, has launched the State Climate Change Policy and Action Plan as part of efforts to advance its green economy agenda and strengthen the state’s response to the growing impact of climate change.
The policy document was launched by the Secretary to the Niger State Government, Abubakar Usman, who was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Abubakar Musa.
Musa said climate change was no longer a distant threat, as its effects were already being felt across communities in Niger State. He identified changing rainfall patterns, recurrent flooding, land degradation and drought as some of the major challenges affecting the people, agriculture and livelihoods across the state.
The commissioner explained that the Climate Change Policy and Action Plan would serve as a roadmap for reducing climate-related risks, strengthening adaptation measures and promoting sustainable development across key sectors of the state’s economy.
He said the policy was designed to provide a coordinated framework for addressing climate-related challenges while supporting the state’s transition towards a more sustainable and climate-resilient economy.
Former Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change and current Special Adviser to Governor Umaru Bago on Forestry and Ecological Matters, Yakubu Kolo, described the launch as a significant demonstration of the state government’s commitment to building a climate-resilient, environmentally sustainable and economically prosperous Niger State.
Kolo assured that the Forestry and Ecological Sector would provide the necessary support towards the effective implementation of the policy, stressing the importance of protecting forests and other natural ecosystems in strengthening the state’s resilience to climate change.
Also speaking, the Director of Climate Change in the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Hashimu Garba, outlined the key components and strategies contained in the policy, explaining how the various measures would be implemented to achieve its objectives.
The Team Lead, Bilateral Cooperation at MyClimate Foundation, Germany, Pablo Kaloghcian, said his team had spent a week in Niger State assessing opportunities for establishing carbon-related activities.
He expressed optimism for his unwavering optimism that the assessment would help identify areas where climate initiatives could attract investment and contribute to the state’s green economy transition.
