Nigeria has recorded its first tele-robotic surgery after a surgeon successfully performed a complex kidney cancer operation on a patient in Abuja while operating the robotic system remotely from Mowe, Ogun State.
The landmark procedure, described as a major milestone in the country’s healthcare and medical technology sector, involved a robot-assisted right radical nephrectomy to remove a cancerous tumour from the patient’s kidney.
The surgery was conducted by Redeemer’s Health Village in collaboration with RoboMed Global.
According to details of the procedure, the surgeon operated the robotic system in real time from a Toumai surgical console at the Redeemer’s Health Village facility in Mowe, while the patient was undergoing the operation at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, about 500 kilometres away.
The development marks a significant shift in the application of advanced robotic technology to surgical care in Nigeria, demonstrating that complex procedures can potentially be carried out remotely across long distances.
The tele-robotic system enabled the surgeon to control the surgical instruments from Ogun State while receiving real-time visual and operational feedback from the operating theatre in Abuja.
The successful procedure could open new possibilities for specialist medical care in Nigeria, particularly by allowing highly trained surgeons to provide expertise to patients in locations where such specialists may not be physically available.
It also highlights the growing role of robotics, high-speed connectivity and digital health technology in expanding access to complex surgical procedures.
The development is expected to generate further interest in the use of telemedicine and robotic surgery to bridge geographical barriers in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
