Nigerians dislike President Tinubu, may re-elect him in 2027 – British newspaper

Daily Post about 1 hour 2 mins read

The popular British newspaper, The Economist, has said Nigerians dislike President Bola Ahmed Tinubu but may re-elect him in the January 16, 2027, presidential election.

In a piece published on Thursday, Nigeria’s Independence Day, the newspaper opined that Tinubu is unpopular among Nigerians.

According to the article, despite Tinubu’s unpopularity, Nigerians may re-elect him in 2027, which is barely three months away.

The newspaper said that while Nigerians are struggling with the heightened cost of living and insecurity, “Mr Tinubu’s cool is surprising.”

“That Nigeria’s unpopular president is not quaking in his suede loafers ahead of the next election says less about him and more about the country’s complicated electoral dynamics,” The Economist wrote on X.

Recall that President Tinubu, in his Independence Day remarks, said that the era of difficulties is over and that prosperity is next.

He, however, ruled out a return of the fuel subsidy, which had pushed petrol prices to between N1,370 and N1,450 per litre at the time of reporting.

However, opposition leaders, including the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, described Tinubu’s promise of prosperity for Nigerians as a “Yahoo Yahoo promise.”

On May 29, 2023, Tinubu removed the petrol subsidy in his famous “fuel subsidy is gone” remarks.

However, in the build-up to the 2027 election, Atiku, the country’s former Vice President, has promised to return the fuel subsidy if elected.

Atiku, Peter Obi of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, and 15 other presidential candidates are seeking to defeat President Tinubu in the January 16, 2027, election.
