Rivers United defender, Stephen Manyo, has described the responsibility of leading the club as a big honour.
Manyo was named captain of the club for the 2026-27 season.
The centre-back said the role requires huge dedication and calmness, especially during difficult moments.
“I feel great captaining this prestigious club. It’s not a small team, both in Nigeria and Africa. So I feel happy as a person,” Manyo told Rivers United media.
Manyo acknowledged the pressure that comes with the armband.
“There will be a lot of pressure because when the boys are not doing well, they come back to the captain. ‘What are you guys doing?’ So for me, I feel the pressure will be there, but this is my job.
“As the captain, I have to try as much as possible to be calm because if I’m not calm, the boys cannot be calm. In troubled times, when things are not going well, I have to try and stay calm so as to lead them well,” he said.
Rivers United will do battle with San Pedro of Cote d’Ivoire in the second leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round tie at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Sunday.
