Super Eagles forward, Sadiq Umar, says the introduction of Video Assistant Referee, VAR, and improved welfare for match officials are critical steps towards raising standards in the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL.
Umar said modern technology and better support for referees would improve fairness and professionalism across Nigerian football.
The forward emphasized that officiating remains a major talking point in the NPFL.
Umar argued that equipping referees with technology and proper incentives would reduce controversies and build confidence among clubs and fans.
“Introduction of VAR and improved welfare for referees are essential steps towards raising the standard of Nigerian football,” the Valencia forward stated in a chat with the media.
Umar’s comments come as debates over officiating quality continue to dominate discussions around the domestic league.
Poor refereeing decisions have repeatedly sparked criticism from players, coaches, and supporters in recent seasons.
