The Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, has appealed to the Nigerian Army to cede a portion of its 989.7-hectare land in Abakaliki to allow for the even and radial development of the state capital.

Governor Nwifuru made the appeal on Wednesday during the passing-out parade of the pioneer set of the 90 Regular Recruits Intake at the Nigerian Army Recruits Training Depot in Amasiri-Edda, which spans Afikpo and Edda Local Government Areas.

Describing the graduation as a historic milestone for both the state and the nation, the governor noted that the establishment of the depot has simultaneously strengthened national security and unlocked new avenues for local economic growth.

”When the idea of establishing this depot on Ebonyi soil was conceived, we wholeheartedly embraced it because we recognised its strategic importance to our nation and its immense benefits to our people,” Nwifuru said.

“Through the special grace of God, what began as a bold vision—expressed initially through the donation of this land by the government and people of Ebonyi State—has today become a living reality.”

In appreciation of the military’s partnership, Governor Nwifuru announced that the state government will fund major infrastructural upgrades at the facility.

The planned projects include the construction of a main hospital and administrative block, an emergency ward, a maternity ward, recruit wards, a theatre, a mortuary, walkways, a generator house, and two solar-powered boreholes with a combined 50,000-litre capacity.

The governor expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for approving and supporting the takeoff of the training depot, calling it a testament to the Federal Government’s commitment to reinforcing Nigeria’s security architecture and promoting inclusive development.

He added that locating the facility in Ebonyi reflects deep confidence in the state and its people.

Reassuring the military of sustained state support, Nwifuru promised to foster harmonious relationships between host communities and personnel while maintaining a peaceful environment for operations.

The governor congratulated the pioneer recruits on completing their rigorous training, charging them to uphold discipline, integrity, and patriotism.

“As you proceed to different formations across the country, always remember the oath you have taken to defend Nigeria, her Constitution, and her people.

“Serve with honour, courage, and loyalty, placing national interest above personal considerations,” the governor said.
